Residents had been calling councillors over the past few days to try to change their minds, but they were not swayed and voted in favour 6-1.
The Hovell Street centre will be closed after a transition process in favour of “smart terminals” placed at various city tourism hotspots with links to maps and an improved website.
Cr Kat Bennett revealed the centre had been receiving just four accommodation bookings per month.
Cr John Watson said the new technology was exciting and he could picture a day where software could immediately share information from the smart terminals to mobile phones.
“We’re all carrying around a smartphone these days, people are booking online,” he said
“I look forward in a brave, new exciting city to try something new, to be innovative.”
