The Savoys dominated from the outset and limited United’s chances on goal to skip three points clear at the top of the ladder.
William Dennis found the back of the net after six minutes, before an own goal off a shot from Arron Redman doubled the advantage in the second half.
Myrtleford co-coach Jayden Vescio said it was a really good result for the squad.
“We had a couple of boys who didn’t get up with injuries, but full credit to the boys that put the work in,” Vescio said.
“Will (Dennis) and Az (Redman) have been really good additions.
“Az has been around for four years now and Will is a cut above, he’s in the class of your Connor Heffernan’s and he showed why in a big game.
“Getting an early goal is a big thing if you’re playing against United.
“They’re a very structured team, so to score early was big for us.”
However, the Savoys know they can’t get complacent.
“It’s a long season and it’s very tight, so we just look forward to St Pats next week and then we’ve got Cobram,” Vescio said.
On the other side of Jelbart Park, Albury City held off a determined Wangaratta fightback to clinch an upset 4-3 victory.
Dan Kelly finished with two goals, while Hayden Curry-Johnson and Aaron Young also finished off some good work.
Raffaele Molinaro, Matt Jordan and Adam Burchell fired in goals in the space of four minutes for the Devils, but it wasn’t enough to snatch a draw.
City coach Matt Maw was very proud of the way his side performed until the final five minutes.
“We played really well to be 1-0 up at half-time and we got another goal straight away with a great bit of play,” Maw said.
“At 3-0 we were cruising and then it went 4-0 and it looked like we could have been five or six up.
“I don’t think the score reflects the game, we were leaps and bounds ahead of them, apart from the last five minutes where they showed their class.
“Our new guy Matt Rane played really well with two assists in his first game for us and Dan Kelly came back in and got two goals for us.
“(17-year-old) Aaron Young played on Connor Heffernan and Heff didn’t look like he was a Star Player because Aaron did a fantastic job on him.”
Cobram moved into second spot with a 3-1 win over St Pats, Albury Hotspurs upset Twin City Wanderers 3-1, Boomers edged out Wodonga Diamonds 2-1, while Melrose thrashed Wodonga Heart 9-0.
The ladder after round 12 is: Myrtleford 28, Cobram Roar 26, Albury United 25, Wangaratta 22, Melrose 21, Boomers 21, Albury City 20, Twin City Wanderers 18, Albury Hotspurs 13, Wodonga Diamonds 9, St Pats 6, Wodonga Heart 0.
