Corowa-Rutherglen didn’t get the drought-breaking win everyone in the league was hoping for, but it produced a feel-good story with Will Chandler kicking five goals on debut as a 15-year-old.
Chandler is the youngest player in the club’s 38-year history in the league.
“Yeah, I’m happy with how I performed and the team’s effort,” he said.
Unfortunately though, the Roos have now joined Wangaratta (1997-99) on the league’s third-longest losing streak with 32.
“It was a big focus for us to get off to a good start,” Rovers’ co-coach Sam Carpenter said.
Hawks’ youngster Jack Reiter also kicked five goals.
