Wodonga Sergeant Patsy Haynes said an empty B-double milk tanker travelling east on the Murray Valley Highway left the road about 4.15am at the intersection with Gills Road, about five kilometres east of Rutherglen.
After crashing into several gum trees, the truck came to rest in a large drainage culvert.
The male driver, 55, was taken by road ambulance to Albury hospital with minor injuries.
Sergeant Haynes said traffic had to be diverted while the truck was removed.
“They needed to actually get a crane there to help lift up the rear tank, because that seems to have got caught up with some tree stumps so they can’t drag it out,” she said.
“Because of all the manpower that will be on the ground, they’ve just had to close the road off to give them a safe area to work in.”
Diversions were in place on the Indigo-Gooramadda Road and the Chiltern-Howlong Road.
Sergeant Haynes said police were yet to interview the truck driver.
Any witnesses to the incident should contact Wodonga police on (02) 6049 2600.
