Nick Lawless was straight to the point when asked if his five goals against Lavington was his best game of the year.
“It’s probably the only game worth watching, I’ve been terrible all year,” he said.
“Fitness and lack of commitment I guess, to be honest, all my own fault.”
The 25-year-old admits numerous positional changes have played a role in his form, adding though he’s more focused now.
“I’d describe him as more unique,” Pigeons’ co-coach Chris Kennedy said.
“He’s got a lot of theories and he’s entertaining, but he’s played in two premierships and he’s pretty hungry for success and today (Saturday) he was switched on.”
FOOT HOLD
Yarrawonga’s Tom Walliss kicked one of the more unusual goals against Lavington.
Team-mate Mark Whiley kicked the ball high midway through the third quarter, landing around 10 metres from goal.
The group of players missed the mark and it landed on Walliss’s boot, even though he didn’t realise it.
The ball rolled through for a major.
MARVELLOUS MARTY
Lavington had only one highlight from the 58-point loss, Marty Brennan.
He landed five goals and the first was his best.
Brennan was near the old scoreboard at the Lavington Sportsground and threaded the needle from around 40 metres.
Lavington’s day went downhill from there.
DYLAN’S DAY
Wangaratta’s Dylan Van Berlo is a crucial, if underrated player, in the Pies’ charge.
He injured his hamstring against Wangaratta Rovers on July 15 and returned against North Albury last week.
“It’s really pleasing to see him launching himself at his marks, he probably would have taken five or six contested marks and was really handy for us,” team-mate Matt Grossman said.
ANOTHER RETIREMENT
Myrtleford has lost another player.
Jarrod Hayse will play his final game, in reserves, on Saturday.
Hayse elected to play his final senior game against his former club in Wangaratta on Saturday.
One of the league’s best kicks in his heyday, Hayse played in Wangaratta’s 2007-08 flags.
FORFEIT
Ladder leader Wodonga Raiders’ preparation for the reserve grade finals wasn’t helped by Corowa-Rutherglen forfeiting on Saturday.
The Raiders will play Lavington this weekend before more than likely having another week off in the first week of the finals.
WILSON WINS
Moyhu’s Jeremy Wilson has caused a boilover by edging hot favourite Karl Norman to take out the Ovens and King league’s Baker medal.
