The image and a series of text messages made it hard for Brodie Ray, 25, to fight gun supply and other weapons offences.
The Albury man pleaded guilty to the charges in Albury Local Court this week.
Ray had initially claimed he took the gun off a friend to keep the community safe.
He had stored it in the frame of a sofa and told police the gun had been stolen.
But a search of the phone showed the 25-year-old had sold the gun, and he later admitted he had taken it back from the buyer.
The gun, bullets and spent rounds were recovered in a Jacaranda Street home.
He will be sentenced from September 25.
