Wayne Gould, whose property backs onto the crash scene, could see flames up to 12 metres above the vehicle.
“There was a big boom about 1.30am last night,” he said.
“I jumped out of bed.
“I didn’t see anything, but the dog was going off out the back.
“I went out the back and I could see flames about 10 or 12 metres high.
“It was lighting up all the area back there.”
Other residents said the explosion was loud enough to rock their home.
Police are expected to address the media in Sydney shortly.
EARLIER: A critical incident investigation has been launched following the death of a man in a crash in Albury overnight.
NSW Police said the vehicle crashed on East Street and the driver died at the scene.
East Street is closed in both directions, south of Albury Base Hospital. Road users are advised to make alternative travel arrangements.
A critical incident team will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
That investigation will be subject to independent review and all information will be provided to the coroner.
