McClay, who limped off the ground early in the reigning premier’s narrow win against Eastlake at the Albury Sportsground on Saturday, was examined yesterday and will undergo scans in coming days to find out the exact extent of the injury.
“It’s a bit worse than we thought, but we’re not sure yet,” Albury coach Paul Spargo said.
“Cal will have the scans and we’ll take it from there.”
Albury opens its season against Yarrawonga in a blockbuster at Mulwala on April 4.
The O and M representative’s absence could leave the club thin in the ruck department with youngsters Jaise Coleman and Ben Dower having little experience and veterans Matt Fowler and Jamarl O’Sullivan unlikely to be risked.
The good news for Albury is that dual best and fairest winner Mark Bush came through his comeback match from a knee reconstruction unscathed against Eastlake and was among the best players on the ground.
