Gundowring Fine Foods has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Ice Cream category while Milawa Cheese Company made the grade in the Washed Rind/Mixed Rind category.
Gundowring Licorice Ice Cream joined Dooley’s Lemon Curd Ice Cream and The Melbourne Convention Centre Hazelnut Ice Cream as finalists.
Milawa King River Gold also joined Woombye Blackall Gold Washed Rind and Flinders Estate Washed Rind Log as finalists.
Gundowring Ice Cream owner James Crooke said the licorice flavour continued to gain accolades for them.
He said the ice cream was made from Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory organic licorice and their own farm-fresh, creamy milk.
“It was originally devised for a local chef about 10 years ago and it’s continued to be a popular flavour for us,” he said.
“Technically it’s a fantastic ice cream and over the years it’s proved popular with the judges.
“A lot of Baby Boomers remember having licorice ice cream as kids but it hadn’t been around for quite a few years so it’s nostalgic for them as well as turning a whole new generation of ice cream lovers on to it.”
The Gundowring Licorice Ice Cream won Champion Ice Cream and overall Best Dairy Product in the Australian Grand Dairy Awards in 2010 as well as being a finalist in 2012.
Gundrowing Vanilla and Coconut were both finalists in 2007 when Vanilla was named Champion Ice Cream.
Gundowring Finest Ice Cream was founded by James’ parents Stephen and Sarah Crooke during 2003.
They wanted to add value to their Gundowring milking operation and sold their first batch of ice cream at a farmers’ market in late 2003 to great acclaim.
The 19th annual Australian Grand Dairy Awards are the country’s most prestigious national dairy awards and the highest recognition for any Australian dairy producer.
A panel of 24 judges tested more than 400 gold medal-winning Australian products over two days recently.
The Australian Grand Dairy Awards champions will be announced in February.
