Daniel Hounslow faced court on Wednesday after Saturday’s incident, which the court heard was alcohol-fuelled.
Hounslow allegedly went to the 40-year-old woman and her 22-year-old son’s home, near his own house in Wodonga, while armed.
Police allege he walked to the front of the property with a meat cleaver and 30 centimetre carving knife.
Hounslow allegedly rubbed the blades together while “very alcohol affected”.
“I’ll chop your heads off,” he allegedly shouted.
“I’m the next Chopper Read.”
Hounslow went back into his home and police arrived, and he allegedly told them to shoot him.
He had to be capsicum sprayed through a window before police could enter and restrain him.
Hounslow was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment and had to be restrained and sedated, but was cleared and released.
The victims said there were three recent incidents of threats and abuse, but this was an escalation.
Hounslow applied to be released after spending Christmas behind bars and said he would live at his mum’s house in Skitch Street.
He is facing charges including making threats to kill, unlawful assault, drunk and disorderly and weapon possession.
The court heard he had undergone a session with a psychologist with more planned.
But magistrate Ian Watkins said he was a risk to the community.
He denied bail with Hounslow to return to the court on January 23.
The victims are seeking personal safety orders.
