Securing the cash in the next round of the Building Better Regions funding will also be another step towards the council realising the long held plans to take ownership of the caravan park on the banks of Lake Hume from Goulburn Murray Water.
The council is prepared to to commit $968,000 to the overall project cost of $1.93 million, but has identified two options for the park’s future operations if the funding bid was successful.
It could be leased to a commercial operator with rent paid to council in addition to a potential upfront capital investment or council staff be appointed to run the park with an anticipated net annual financial return of more than $300,000 within a decade.
A total of 70 jobs are also projected to be created.
“The financial commitment required from council is manageable given the long term benefits expected to be realised for the local and regional community,” Towong Shire community and corporate services director Jo Shannon said.
The latest funding would be spent on master planning and design, civil works, creation of tourist cabins, additional and upgraded caravan and camping site facilities, swimming pool, jumping pillow, playground and mini golf area.
Towong Shire is also rolling the dice for a 50-50 split on the cost of the $5.34 million Connecting Corryong project.
Upgraded pedestrian and cycling links with key Upper Murray tourism destinations, a new lookout at Playle’s Hill and town entrance improvements will be created if the funding application succeeds.
Towong’s contribution will be funded via the existing asset renewal program.
