Border hockey sisters Macey and Summer Sutherland have added to the region’s growing list of representative players by making the ACT under 18s side for the national championships.
Summer, 16 and Macey, 17, have played all their hockey for Wodonga, with Macey reaching state teams every year since she was 11, while her younger sibling was a late bloomer.
Her mother, Donna, admitted Summer had no interest in hockey unlike her sisters Macey and Riley.
“She hated hockey, we’d drag her along to all the girls’ tournaments,” Donna said.
“Summer would come sit on the sidelines with us and she knew all the rules and everything that was going.
“She did swimming and changed to athletics, but when she was 13 she wanted to play hockey and two years later she made her first state team.”
The girls’ uncle, Troy, was part of the Australian indoor side which finished fourth at this year’s World Cup in Berlin.
Nationals are at Launceston from March 13 to 21.
