School mates Daniel Gill, 16, and James Walker, 15, have become the youngest golfers from the club to be selected for the six-player squad, with fellow Wodonga product Zach Murray 17 years of age when he received the honour in 2014.
Walker and Gill, the only country golfers in the team, head to Perth for the Australian Boys Amateur Championship at Gosnells Golf Club from April 11-13, before teaming up for Interstate Series matches at Hartfield from April 16-19.
Five members of the squad play each round against all the Australian states, with the top team after the four days crowned champions.
Gill, who has also been included in Commonwealth Golf Club’s men’s pennant side this season, captained by Murray, admits the state call-up is his biggest achievement so far.
“There’s been a lot of good results in the last six months or so which got me over the line,” Gill said.
“All the best juniors in Australia will be playing in this too, so it will be good to compare ourselves against them.”
Gill fired an eight-under par round at last year’s Victorian Junior Open at 13th Beach on his way to a 13th place finish, he went one better at the Victorian Junior Masters at Waverley, grabbing a tie for 12th.
The youngster also contested the Greg Norman Junior Masters on the Gold Coast and the Pacific School Games in Adelaide.
Walker has been delighted with his form during the past`12 months, particularly his top-five performance at the Victorian Junior Masters.
“I led for the first three days, but had a bad last round,” Walker said.
“It was disappointing that I didn’t come away with the win, but it was good to finish top-five.
“I would have been happy with a top-20 there.”
Walker also went to Sydney to represent the state’s under 15 boys, and fired in strong rounds at the Victorian Boys Championship at Yarra Yarra and Victorian Junior Open.
But he’s still pinching himself after finding out he’ll be representing his state this year.
“It was such a surprise when I got the email, I wasn’t expecting it,” Walker said.
“I was thinking next year I was a chance, but definitely not this year.
“It would be nice to get my first win at a big tournament this year.”
Walker is also eager to experience golf in Perth for the first time.
Both Gill and Walker will enter the interstate series in terrific form after starring at the Victorian Men’s Country Championships, hosted by Rosebud Country Club.
Gill (+7) was the overnight leader heading into the final round, but finished in a tie for second, while Walker (+10) was equal fifth.
Fellow Wodonga juniors Josh Smith (+27), Connor Flavell (+41) and Jack McAuliffe (+48), who recently recorded his first hole-in-one, also contested the event.
North Eastern finished second in the team standings.
