The year 12 Tallangatta Secondary College student’s curiosity and drive has been rewarded, as Zara was one of only four Australian students selected to take part in an international National Youth Science Forum at the University of Michigan.
But the prestigious selection comes at a price and Zara needs the community’s help – and $5750 – to make her dream a reality.
“I’m very excited,” Zara said.
“I wasn’t sure I would get in, there are several international programs, but each one only has four places, so it’s pretty unreal.
“I never really knew if I would get in because being a rural kid, you never really know how you compare to everyone else. I just wanted to give it a shot and see what happened.”
Science teacher Rab Kusmierski has taught Zara on and off since year 7.
He said considering how many students studied science across Australia it was incredibly rare for anyone to be selected for the program, let alone someone from regional Tallangatta.
“I'm over the moon, very, very proud,” Mr Kusmierski said.
“It’s very well deserved I think she’s a real inspiration not only to future female scientists but to all scientists.
“To be honest I’ve always expected Zara would achieve great things, she has always impressed me with her critical thinking skills, so in one way I wasn’t surprised but I am over the moon.”
For two weeks in June and July this year Zara will head over to America to attend classes at the University of Michigan, before conducting her own research.
Zara will also have the change to participate in cultural events and experience 4th of July celebrations first-hand.
“Everyone is really excited for me I think,” she said.
“People have been helping me raise money so I can go, we raised $3000 in three days alone.”
Zara said local community clubs had been especially supportive.
After completing her year 12 VCE, Zara hopes to complete a phD in mathematics, chemistry or another science discipline.
“I’d love to be a researcher and educator, I can’t imagine not going into science, it’s cliche but it’s my calling,” she said.
“I can’t imagine doing anything else.
“I really enjoy that you can explain the complexities of our world, and seek explanations for what things are made of and why.”
Zara said people could access more information and help her fundraise by visiting the Send Zara to Michigan gofundme page.
