Option A would involve the demolition of the community hall and old kindergarten building, with a new library to be built at the rear of the Town Hall.

Contingent on securing further external funding, the Town Hall would be refurbished in a second stage.

In Option B and C, the Town Hall would be redeveloped to house the library, but in the former scenario the community hall would remain, and in the latter both it and the kindergarten building would be demolished.

The proposals follow $200,000 committed by council for detailed design work in collaboration with Yarrawonga Library Project Steering Committee and consultants from Urban Enterprise.

Councillor Peter Mansfield said nine locations in total were investigated.

“We had the option of the old Denis Medical Clinic if it could be obtained, and it was considered not suitable because of lack of availability for expansion,” he said.

“A couple other locations were in private hands.

“The consultants have given us all the options and come up with three major ones, which we believe will be excellent for the library and community of Yarrawonga.

“That’s why we want feedback from the public – council do not want to force something on the public they don’t want.

“Once we do that, council staff will review the responses from the public and present them to council.”

Cr Mansfield hoped a decision would be finalised by the end of the year, with each scenario expected to cost “a minimum of a couple million”.

“This time next year, we should have concept plans drawn up so we can go the Living Libraries (Infrastructure Program) and state government for funding … the project will not go ahead unless we get funding,” he said.

“The existing library is too small, it’s really not suitable, and we want the library to be about more than books.”

Feedback can be submitted through the Moira Council website and the Yarrawonga Neighbourhood House will also assist residents to fill out the survey.
