Mr Tilley announced Rutherglen’s Barkly Park would receive a $350,000 makeover, should the Coalition be elected to government in November.
During a coin toss at the opening game of the year for Rutherglen, Mr Tilley said the upgrade was Indigo Council’s number one priority in the 2015/16 financial year but was only able to attract a portion of the necessary state funding.
“We have been working on this project for several years and the Barkly Park Committee of Management has put a lot of hard work and fundraising into making this happen,” he said.
Mr Tilley said Opposition leader Matthew Guy had pledged to use the $300 million earmarked for a Docklands upgrade to rebuild grassroots venues.
He said in country areas, sporting grounds were vital.
“We have seen in the past 1500 people here at games,” Mr Tilley said.
“There are so many community groups that use the facilities and it is a hub for celebrations.
“It really is a gathering place for Rutherglen.”
Barkly Park committee of management’s Graham Steed said the money would be used to create a multi-function centre with a viewing deck and extra space in the building.
“This is a massive boost for the people of Rutherglen, its many sports teams and the families, schools, community clubs and businesses that are desperate for comfortable and functioning meeting and function spaces,” he said.
Barkly Park is home to more than 20 sporting and community clubs including football and netball clubs.
