The Bureau of Meteorology’s severe weather warning for the north east of Victoria continues on Thursday morning with damaging winds forecast. Locations which may be affected include Mount Hotham, Falls Creek and Mount Buller.
A deepening low pressure system will pass over far southwest Victoria overnight then will move away to the southeast. An associated trough is forecast to move eastwards across Victoria during Thursday.
Damaging north to northwesterly winds, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected about elevated parts of the warning area. About the Alpine region (above 1200 metres), peak gusts around 120 km/h are expected, most likely during the late morning.
Mount Hotham recorded wind gusts of 87 km/h at 3.43am and Mount Buller 126km/h at 4.22am.
Winds are expected to ease over western and central parts this morning and over the east by evening.
In addition to the strong winds, due to the dry April conditions the CFA has issued a severe fire warning for North East Victoria and the NSW RFS has issued a very high fire danger for Southern New South Wales.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
- Keep clear of fallen power lines;
The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 11:00 am AEST Thursday.
EARLIER: The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for the north east of Victoria, with extreme winds expected to hit on Wednesday night.
The northerly winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 90 to 100 km/h are expected to develop about elevated parts in the west of the warning area later tonight before extending to remaining elevated parts of the warning area early Thursday morning.
About the Alpine region (above 1200 metres), peak gusts may reach 120 km/h during the late morning and early afternoon.
Winds are expected to ease from the west during Thursday afternoon and evening. Locations which may be affected include Mount Hotham and Falls Creek.

Temperatures are expected to drop later in the week, following the unusually hot start to April.
The mercury will only reach 18 degrees on Sunday for Albury-Wodonga and a top of 4 degrees for Falls Creek and 3 degrees for Mount Hotham.
