The grief process can encompass a range of difficult emotions that can include disbelief, even a sense of anger at times, and emotion and even physical pain.
While each person’s journey is different, ultimately those emotions are the same for all of us when we suffer the loss of someone we love. Time does not necessarily heal all wounds but it can bring us to a point where we are better able to put one foot in front of the other again.
For most people, it is important to be able to go to the final resting place of their loved ones and reflect on treasured memories, taking the time for quiet contemplation in a peaceful and respectful place. Every person’s right to do that must be respected.
It is a sad fact indeed that within our community, we have some self-centred cretins who believe in showing no such respect for other people. For the third time in just six months, the road at the Glenmorus Memorial Gardens cemetery has been stained with the rubbery remnants of idiots doing burnouts.
On a recent visit to the grave of his wife Ester, former Albury policeman George Krooglik was devastated to see the fresh marks on the road. He is absolutely right when he says the actions of those responsible are disrespectful to every person resting in that cemetery, and those they left behind.
Whether these ongoing acts are some form of red-neck tribute or just a case of senseless vandalism, we don’t know and it matters not. Whatever the motivation, it’s hard to imagine a more selfish act.
Locals would understand that this is indeed isolated behaviour, and as such does not reflect on the city of Albury. But what of the many people who have loved ones in that cemetery who no longer live here, or have never lived here? The mark of hoons on our beautiful cemetery unfortunately tars our city with a very dirty brush.
It is clear now this behaviour is no one off. It is being executed by self-absorbed little twits, who have absolutely no regard for the loss and pain experienced by anyone but themselves.
Albury City simply can not stand for this. Albury Council must act quickly to install cameras as a deterrent or perhaps better yet, catch these grubs in the act so that they may be held accountable for the contemptible actions.
