Liam Hutchinson, 8, may not have the Olympics in his sights just yet, but he’s been hitting the rink every week for the past couple years.
On Friday he was among a group of young skaters taking their knowledge of the sport back to square one.
A safety roadshow hosted by Roads and Maritime Service stopped in Albury for the first time after sessions in Griffith and Wagga.
With the assistance of Intereach, Woomera Aboriginal Corporation and other groups, kids learned safety tips, beginner tricks and traded in their old helmets.
A spokeswoman said RMS had noted low usage of helmets among skateboard and scooter riders in both the Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities.
“Almost a quarter of children aged five to 14 in Australia take part in scooter or skate boarding activities, so it is important they do so safely,” she said.
