After years of finishing second best to Kiewa-Sandy Creek, Rutherglen spearhead John Spencer took matters into his own hands at Rutherglen on Saturday.
Spencer’s nine-goal bag against the Hawks proved the difference in the home team’s impressive 18-point victory.
“It’s the first time I’ve actually ever beaten them in any grade,” Spencer, 26, said.
“That goes back to the thirds and fourths when I was at Chiltern.
“They have always been such a strong club.
“It was good to finally get a win.”
In front of a big crowd, Rutherglen led at every change with Spencer and the deceptive Tyson Neander kicking 13 goals between them.
Spencer’s best haul in senior football is 10 goals against Wodonga Saints.
“It was just one of those days,” he said.
“There was some good delivery and things fell my way.”
Matt Ross, Kade Wilson, Pat Murtagh and Seamus Bromley were outstanding for Rutherglen as the Cats kept their unbeaten record intact.
Kiewa-Sandy Creek opted to use Jack Di Mizio on the ball and across half-back instead of playing him deep in defence on Spencer.
Di Mizio picked up plenty of possessions with Mal Vogel, Cal Turner and Guy Telford also making big impressions.
An injury-decimated Thurgoona was forced to dig deep to defeat Wahgunyah by 27 points at Thurgoona.
The Lions stayed within striking distance until the final 10 minutes but were unable to wear down Luke Gerecke, Cody Mannagh and Ewan Hampton.
The dangerous Michael Rampal also bobbed up with some quality possessions when the reigning premier needed him most.
Wahgunyah’s Corey Smith did everything in his power to orchestrate an upset by kicking eight goals in a brilliant individual performance.
Beechworth’s notched up its third straight win by defeating Mitta United by 28 points.
After a tight first-half, the Bushrangers hit their straps with Brenton and Kayde Surrey, Riley Petts and Michael Voigt prominent.
Mitta United has only managed to kick nine, six and eight goals in their three matches this season.
Tallangatta recruit Tom Johnson kicked five goals to help hold off Dederang-Mt Beauty by 16 points.
Johnson, the in-form Joel O’Connell and Adam Healy played key roles while Josh Kable and Dale Lappin served the Bombers well.
Ladder leader Barnawartha finished strongly to defeat Chiltern by 28 points.
Yackandandah defeated Wodonga Saints by 110 points.
