It was unknown how the relatively inexperienced side would stack up against the best teams in Canberra, but after a strong opening fortnight, it has become clear they won’t be making up the numbers.
Payne took pride in the way the side competed in its 2-0 loss to early front-runners Wests on Saturday and believes a top-four berth shouldn’t be overlooked.
“It’s actually made Tony (co-coach Tony Donnolley) and I sit down and restructure the team as a stronger side,” Payne said.
“We’ve planned a lot of the year to be a defensive fall away side, but now knowing we can put it to the top team like that and really pressure them, we’re going to have to rewrite it I think.”
The Spitfires recorded a 5-1 victory against Tuggeranong in round one without a number of key players.
