But despite reports to the contrary, the Albury legend’s outstanding playing and coaching career had nothing to do with him being asked by Melbourne to present son Charlie his jumper before debuting against Essendon at Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

“We have changed things this year in that when we have a debutant the player’s dad presents the guernsey instead of a former player,” a Melbourne spokesman said.

“We think it’s a nice touch.”

Spargo, who kicked two goals and had 18 possessions in a dream debut, said he couldn’t have asked for anything more.

“I warmed up and it was awesome to play on Etihad [Stadium] and I had the jumper presentation with Dad,” Spargo said.

“He’s been someone who’s always helped me with my footy and given me advice, since he had a lot of experience playing.

“He’s always been really good to me.

“It was terrific to get a win in my first game.”
