Firefighters were called to the Kosciuszko Road home at Thurgoona about 10.35am on Tuesday.
Neighbours tried to use garden hoses through a window to extinguish the blaze.
Two firefighters forced entry to the home and brought the incident under control.
Senior firefighter Jim Browne said it appeared the stove was left on after chips had been cooked in oil.
“There’s smoke damage through the whole house, but we’ve contained the actual fire to the kitchen and lounge room area,” he said.
“The fire also got into the roof via ducting and an exhaust fan in the kitchen.”
Mr Browne warned people to ensure stoves were turned off after cooking.
Firefighters spent about an hour on scene.
