Welfare advocate Alex Wolf, speaking as The Coo-Wee Ride passed through Wodonga on Thursday, said the centre’s volunteers assisted a wide range of people.
World War II veterans in their 90s looked forward to being visited while the centre also helped younger veterans and their families.
“We’re still finding Vietnam veterans who are recluse at home by word of mouth that they just sit there all day drinking and watching TV,” Mr Wolf said.
“Sometimes it takes a year for us to get them back on track, because initially they don’t even want to talk to you, but eventually they’ll have a cup of coffee out and we’ll go and talk.
“We don’t specifically take on the role of the professionals, we know who the professionals are and we’ve got direct access and refer these people to the right places.”
