A FORMER high school teacher who raped or sexually assaulted seven students, including during camping trips to the Border, will remain in jail until at least 2025.

Carl William Doherty, 82, was recently sentenced for the offending, which occurred between April 1965 and May 1981.
The former woodwork, metalwork and technical drawing teacher, who was based at Junee, assaulted a 12-year-old victim while camping near Albury in 1979.
A 13 or 14-year-old boy was abused near Gerogery in 1971 in similar circumstances and another boy, aged 13, was sexually assaulted during a trip to Howlong the following year.
Judge Gordon Lerve noted “all offences involve a very substantial breach of trust”.
He ordered a maximum jail term of 18 years and nine months, at which time he will be aged 99.
