A Zac Walker penalty in extra time clinched the 2-1 victory for the Wanderers against Boomers, breaking a 35-year drought since their last cup triumph in 1973.

Former coach Pedro Afonso said it meant a lot.

“I was a new coach and we had a bit of a project the year before, but lost in the semi-finals to Myrtleford,” he said.

“We kept building a really solid team, it was a bunch of kids really.

“Zac Walker was 15-years-old, Michael Anderson is now in NPL in Geelong, Aaron Williams, Brendan and Matty Hasler and guys like that.

“It was fantastic to see these kids develop and to be rewarded with a cup final win against Boomers, with Zac scoring the winning penalty, was fantastic.”

This weekend is the first leg of the Josh Kennedy Testimonial Shield.
