Five members of Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort snared the Holden Scramble women’s event at Twin Waters on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.
“It’s definitely my biggest thrill in golf,” an excited Wendy Hennessy said.
“It’s exhausting though, I’m not used to playing four days in a row (including Friday’s practice round).”
The team shot 10-under par to win by 4.9 shots from South Australia’s Lucindale and Toowoomba’s City Golf Club.
The team comprised four amateurs in Hennessy (13 handicap), her daughter Georgia Macklan (five), Samantha Churchin (12) and Kathleen Peters (23), along with Yarrawonga trainee pro Frazer Droop.
“There was a long par three, 190m, and on two of the three days, Frazer put it to within a foot, he’s a machine,” Hennessy said.
The event also hosted high-profile professionals Craig Parry and Richard Green, who played one hole for each team.
“Craig Parry’s shot was the furthest away, we gave him a hard time too, but they were such nice blokes,” Hennessy said.
The tournament has a party atmosphere and Hennessy, a non-drinker, said some of the team had a big night prior to the final.
“I’m surprised that we won,” Hennessy joked.
The team had finished third and second previously.
“There was 35,500 play this year, there was only 150 that experienced the (championship) event,” PGA Australia’s Michael Chard said.
