Aaron Marks, 38, was found unconscious with serious head injuries on a footpath in Ballina in the early hours of May 13.
He had left a pub on River Street two hours earlier.
Mr Marks was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition but died a few days later.
The State Crime Command homicide squad was brought in and a strike force was established to piece together Mr Marks' final hours.
On Monday they released CCTV images of what police say could be a grey Nissan Skyline and a man on River Street on May 13.
"Detectives are urging anyone with information on the man or the car or anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward," police said in a statement.
They previously released images of Mr Marks leaving the pub before the attack.
