Doug Dupille, of Sandy Creek, felt immense pride when he, Myrtleford’s Bryan Meehan and their fellow combatants in a Vietnam War conflict received a Unit Citation for Gallantry.
Back from the 50th anniversary reunion of the Battles of Fire Support Bases Coral and Balmoral, Mr Dupille said the veterans had been surprised to be presented with a commemorative medallion as well as the citation.
“The only sad part about it there’s so many veterans that have passed on since, but their next of kin will receive both,” he said.
The 26-day battle began with an enemy attack on May 13, 1968, and claimed 26 Australian lives.
Mr Dupille said the reunion in Townsville was “a wonderful four days” of parades and ceremonies, including a large dinner with present-day soldiers.
“We were applauded in, which brought goosebumps up on everyone,” he said.
