“He was heavily intoxicated and aggressive,” magistrate Rodney Brender said when remanding Jarrad Blanco in custody.
Police allegedly found two knives on the unemployed 22-year-old when they arrested him at the Crisp Street home of his alleged victim early on Saturday morning.
Blanco’s solicitor told Albury Local Court his client, who was able to provide a $200 surety on bail being granted, was at greater risk of self-harm if he remained in custody.
His mental fragility had been exacerbated, he said, by the alleged murder of Blanco’s father, Christopher Quirk, at Corowa in March.
But Mr Brender drew issue with that argument, pointing out that any mental health issues could be more effectively addressed under the supervision of jail.
Police opposed bail, pointing to genuine fears for the safety of the victim, the allegation that Blanco was carrying two knives and that he had failed to appear in court in accordance with bail on previous occasions.
Mr Brender agreed, pointing out how Blanco allegedly held the kitchen knife to his throat and threatened “I’m going to stab you in the neck”.
“In my view there are serious risks,” he said.
“Despite the fact that he will be in custody for some time, I refuse bail.”
Blanco did not enter pleas to break and enter to commit a serious indictable offence of intimidation, armed with intent to commit an indictable offence, contravene an apprehended violence order, resist police, custody of a knife in a public place and stalk or intimidate.
Mr Brender said the accused had a lengthy criminal history in NSW, including assaults against the same victim and AVO breaches.
“The offences are of a serious nature, being domestic violence-related with the accused attending the victim’s residence without her consent and arming himself with a knife before threatening her,” he said.
“As a result the victim ran away from the accused and has fears for her safety.”
Blanco was remanded in custody to appear again on July 16.
