Troy Hawkins, 43, allegedly strangled the woman to the point she stopped breathing after trapping her in his laundry and biting her nose, face and ears on April 28.
He allegedly followed her in his car while drunk after she ran away from the Ethel Street property.
Hawkins appeared before the Wodonga Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
Lawyer Mario Vaccaro said there had been discussions with police about the matter, with issues yet to be resolved.
Hawkins, who was supported in court by his mother, has previously been denied bail but will apply again next Thursday.
He will consent to an intervention order for the alleged victim if he is released, with a surety to be offered.
Police have previously expressed fears about his alleged access to a gun and that he will seek revenge on the woman.
