"I appreciate the intent of the bill and for that reason I'm likely to support it," Ms Berejiklian said on Wednesday of the measure that would create 150-metre exclusion zones around surgeries.
The Liberal leader’s stance contrasts with her colleague, Albury MLA, Greg Aplin who is yet to declare his position on the bill that will be debated in the state’s Upper House on Thursday.
Mr Aplin said the “Premier is not conducting a research campaign” and he wanted to continue to take feedback from his electorate before showing his hand.
“It’s all very well to look at in a superficial way, I think I owe the community a more detailed analysis of their views and they deserve to be listened to,” Mr Aplin said.
He could announce whether he supports or opposes the bill as early as Friday, saying he felt he should give the electorate at least a week from last Friday to offer opinions.
Mr Aplin said that he had not “adopted a position” but noted the “community viewpoint was becoming more evident”.
He said he had spoken to Mrs Berejiklian about protests which have occurred at Albury’s Englehardt Street abortion clinic for many years and his efforts to address it previously with government ministers and the police.
A number of respondents have suggested the 150-metre perimeter should be extended to 500 metres.
