Norris Park Neighbourhood Garden, the city’s newest such project, set up 12 garden beds at a working bee last month, with the volunteers also planting a few vegetables.
“The kids are really keen to plant carrots, so we’ve got a lot of carrots,” resident Linda Robinson said.
Located in Anne Hogan Park, Sarson Road, Glenroy, the site is the fourth Albury community garden, following others in central, east and south locations (see stories below).
“I’d just seen the other gardens around and I thought they’d be really nice to bring kids to and learn about gardening,” Ms Robinson said.
A party at the park last year gauged interest, with an Albury Council grant, a Facebook page and flyer drop through the estate also advancing the idea.
About 30 people attended the April 29 working bee that installed six raised garden beds made by Berrigan Men’s Shed as well as others on the ground marked by sleepers.
Most of the registered gardeners have shared plots while there is also a communal herb garden.
Ms Robinson said the garden helped the children learn about where food comes from and how it’s grown.
“They’re asking when will the carrots be ready, how big are they, how do we plant them, so there’s really good learning opportunities for them,” she said.
Setting up the site had also made it easier to meet other people in Norris Park.
“It’s all that stuff that helps improve wellbeing – being connected in your community, knowing your neighbours,” she said.
“I really like that side of the garden.”
