Now, the decedents of those original families will return to the valley, after the community, who rallied to preserve the memorial, celebrates its new home.
Tallangatta Valley Progress Association president Stuart Morant said while they were initially against the memorial moving when the town’s school closed but were happy with the new location and please the government had agreed to foot the bill.
The $20,000 relocation of the statue to Tallangatta Valley Hall will be celebrated with a morning tea and official opening on Sunday.
“We invited decedents of the first families who put monument there because it was a community project where they all all contributed money and built monument,” Mr Morant said.
“They’ve done an excellent job, it’s placed at a more accessible site and the community have put in a lot of work.”
