Whether it was organising major events, helping begin the careers of the Border’s next sporting star, or ensuring everyone has food on their plate, a mood of thankfulness and appreciation filled the air at Woodland Grove.

The awards, held as part of the Wodonga Volunteers Fair, recognised a number Wodonga’s most generous groups and individuals.

Two awards for individuals were presented, with Peter Whitmarsh recognised in the community service category for his work on the Border Relay for Life committee.

Zennon McCarty was presented the award in the Sports and Recreation category for his tireless work, which has come to life in more than 18 volunteer positions over the last 13 years.

The Albury-Wodonga Foodshare were named Volunteer Team of the Year, while Healthy Mothers, Healthy Families and Aspire Family Network’s Katrina Redcliffe won the people’s choice award.

The Wodonga Bulldogs All-Abilities team won the group people’s choice award.

Mr Whitmarsh said the hours spent organising one of the region’s largest annual events were all worth it to eradicate cancer.

“It’s just a great opportunity to give back,” he said.

“At the end of the day, it’s about getting rid of that damn thing called cancer and creating a future free of it for our children.”
