It’s a comedic and colourful light-hearted mockery of the movie, and Olivia Newton-John’s terrible accent in it.
But while co-directors Lachlan Murray and Lauren Schmutter assure it will be a pleaser for parents, there’s plenty in it for the kids too.
“This is definitely a kid’s show – there’s lots of colour and mythological creatures,” Ms Schmutter said.
“People who don’t particularly like Xanadu might think that’s what will be on stage, but this is actually taking the mickey out of it.”
Ms Schmutter said parents would enjoy the music of Electric Light Orchestra, and some new additions.
“There’s also some of the songs in the musical that aren’t in the movie, for example from an Olivia Newton-John album,” she said.
“With the amount of theatre available to the community, to do something different helps create diversity.”
Mr Murray said the production offered something new for the cast, ranging from ages eight to 18.
“We thought we’d move away from Disney this year and give the kids a bit more of a challenge, with characters they didn’t know,” he said.
New characters were created for the 53-member cast.
Sonny Malone is played by 15-year-old Kobey Hudec and Kira is Ellie Constable, 15, who took the initiative to practise her roller-skating with roller derby teams.
“I’ve been in all of them (Byte Sized shows) and this is the biggest role I’ve had so far,” she said.
- Xanadu Junior is on at the Albury Entertainment Centre at 7pm on Friday, and at 2pm and 7pm on Saturday.
