She is the first woman in District 24 to hold such a role.
Ms Whitaker has spent the past 14 years as a volunteer at the brigade, in roles including communications officer, lieutenant and District 24 women’s reference group chairperson.
The group holds annual events to showcase the work of female firefighters.
“A little bit of what we’ve shown on those days must have rubbed off on me too because it’s quite inspiring to listen to other women who have achieved leadership in CFA,” Ms Whitaker said.
“I’m proud of being a member of this brigade ... and all the way through I’ve been supported to try anything that I was interested in.”
