The Saints led by three goals heading into the final quarter, but the Bulldogs kicked the last three to fall, 14.9 (93) to 12.18 (90).
The Bulldogs will rue a lost chance after also kicking seven behinds in that term.
“One team’s mindset is to hang on and the other one’s trying to win, it became tense and tight,” delighted Saints’ co-coach Terry Burgess said.
Lachie Dale kicked five majors, while 16-year-old debutant Ryley Bouker nabbed three, with the double-pronged attack superb.
Captain Matt Dussin was also outstanding, while counterpart Jackson Russell was the Bulldogs’ best.
