I looked up the definition of the word historian, and it told me “an expert in or student of history”, until I read that I had been reluctant to label myself a historian, because I am very much a beginner.

I am not even Wodonga born and bred. Much of what I write about is being taken from published texts and old newspapers. Wodonga Historical Society is fortunate to have been left with a complete set of Wodonga and District Express newspapers, some in better condition than others. A volunteer recently did a complete stocktake and packaged them for safe keeping.
Some of you may remember Rosemary Boyes’ Columns of History printed in that publication. There were 571 episodes covering history from both sides of the border. Another one of our wonderful volunteers has scanned and OCR’d these so that they are searchable and another valuable source of local history, much of it from contributors to her page. Rosemary also was not local born and bred.
Due to end of lease, the Wodonga Historical Society needs to relocate to new premises in less than 12 months, and while it is a huge undertaking for a small team, we are excited about what it means for our future.
Many community members have commented on the inadequacy of our current premises in allowing us to showcase Wodonga’s history to its best advantage, and we’ve taken all of this on board. We need a venue that is central and preferably has plenty of wall space to display our pictures.
We rely solely on volunteers to care for, and record, our town’s history. We know from responses to our Facebook page you care greatly about Wodonga, its history and its future.
Now we need you to also show your commitment to helping us. If you know of a suitable venue, have time to spare come moving time, or can support us financially to undertake this important work, there is no better time than today to get in touch.
Our history belongs to us all, please help ensure it is available for future generations.
