The Sustainable Activity Centre in Wodonga has plenty of donated fabric but not enough people to make the reusable shopping bags.
Boomerang Bags – Albury Wodonga & Surrounds spokeswoman Andrea Palmer said the reusable shopping bags were made from recycled and donated materials that would otherwise go to landfill.
“We have piles and piles of fabric and really need more people to help cut out and sew,” she said.
Boomerang Bags – Albury Wodonga volunteers have made 1077 bags since the group formed in April 2017.
Bags have been given out to individuals, Almar Organics, CSU Orientation Day and conferences; Dare’s Fruit & Veges, Border Just Foods and East Albury IGA are next on the list.
The Sustainable Activity Centre director, Claire Greenhaigh, said they could not keep up with demand, which would rise as Victoria moved towards banning single use plastic bags.
“It’s a really easy sewing project; if you’ve never sewn, we’ll teach you,” she said.
“It’s also knowing that what you’re doing is part of a community solution to reducing plastic bags.”
The SAC hosts a Boomerang Bags sewing bee on Wednesdays from 10am to 2pm.
It would also host a second weekly working bee outside of business hours should there be enough interest to support it.
Volunteers are wanted to screenprint the pockets for the Boomerang Bags too.
