A FORMER Holbrook policeman, who was fatally struck on the NSW south coast earlier this month, will be farewelled on Saturday.

A public memorial service for Michael Horne will be held in Bega.

Mr Horne, 54, died in hospital on Sunday, June 3, after he was allegedly attacked by a 20-year-old man in Bega during a carjacking on the Friday night.

The Tura Beach resident has been fondly remembered by many in the Bega Valley community as well as in his former home town of Holbrook, as “one of the nicest people imaginable”.

Police will salute the former senior constable, who retired from the force in 2009, at the funeral.

Mr Horne is survived by wife Mel and adult son Tom.

The memorial service is open to the public and will take place in the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre, from 11am Saturday.
