The league will host a gala event prior to next year’s season launch to celebrate 125 years.
It’s uncertain whether the O and M will name a Team of the Century and a team of the past 25 years or just the one outfit, but the former is the favourite.
A netball team of its 25 years will also be named.
Football started in 1893.
“The league’s never had a Team of the Century and we just need to tick it off,” chairman David Sinclair said.
COACH CHARGED
Lavington mentor Simon Curtis has been charged with striking Wangaratta’s Mat Suckling during the first quarter of Saturday’s game.
Curtis has been offered a one-match set penalty and has until 10am Tuesday to accept the ban.
If he decides to fight the charge, it will go to the tribunal.
Meanwhile, Wodonga’s Jackson Heagney-Steart has also been charged with striking Wangaratta Rovers’ Connor Crimmins.
He’s elected to take the matter to tomorrow night’s tribunal.
KING OF CASUALNESS
Albury’s Jessy Wilson’s laconic style hides a fierce competitiveness.
“Jessy’s a Howlong boy like myself, so he’s one of my favourites,” co-coach Shaun Daly joked.
“We’ve both got ordinary kicking styles, but he works really hard.”
It’s hard to explain the 18-year-old’s technique, but his long-range goal in the third term against Raiders was critical.
“I grew up not playing much footy, so I just taught myself, it’s not the most orthodox style,” he said.
He’s an ex-basketballer.
SO CLOSE
North Albury co-coach Clint Gilson said the five-point loss to Yarrawonga was his most disappointing at the club.
“It would be, we only won five games the first year (as an assistant to Jason Akermanis) and three last year, just in terms of what it would have meant,” he said.
North has 18 points, the same as fifth-placed Lavington, with the Hoppers trailing on percentage.
The pair meets in round 15, so that will probably decide fifth spot and be one of the most anticipated games between the rivals in years.
GREAT GOAL
Raiders’ forward Sam Stubbs kicked the game’s best goal against the Tigers in the wet.
Stubbs tried to mark the ball around the 50m arc, but was paid a free kick and played on.
In front of Raiders’ fans in their function centre, the classy goalsneak slotted a superb shot from 40m on the boundary.
Coach Daryn Cresswell has often spoken about his X-factor and a return of 2.2 in the conditions was certainly a pass mark.
That reduced the deficit to one before the Tigers’ surge.
REP SELECTION
Six O and M players have been named in the original Vic Country squad.
Lavington defender Nick Meredith, Myrtleford defender-ruckman Matt Dussin, Wangaratta defender Dylan Van Berlo and Wodonga Raiders’ utility Jydon Neagle join Yarrawonga duo Harry Wheeler and Brandon Symes in the 42-man squad.
Vic Country will meet Vic Metro in Ballarat on July 7, which is an O and M bye.
There’s also eight players in the Vic Country under 19 squad.
Yarrawonga’s Damian Sexton will coach that team.
