Two men aged 47 and 31 returned home to a unit block on Kaitlers Road at 12.30am on Saturday, noticing a man standing with a grey Ford Falcon parked outside.
The 31-year-old approached the man, and after speaking with him quickly left in a Holden Commodore with the 47-year-old.
As the pair were leaving, they noticed two other men run from the unit block and into the back of the Falcon, which then pursued the victims, and shots were fired.
Albury Detective Inspector Winston Woodward could not comment on what happened during that conversation, but said the victims stated they did not know the man in the Falcon.

“At this stage it seems there could have been up to three (shots fired), but it appears the vehicle was only hit twice,” he said.
“Once the vehicle has been forensically examined we will have a better idea.
“I’d like to call for assistance from any member of the public who may have information based on the two parties involved in this matter – some people know more information than what we’re being given at this time.
“Even though it happened at 12.30am on a Saturday morning, innocent bystanders could have been walking in the area.
“Murray River Police District takes a zero-tolerance approach to firearms offences.”
While police are still hunting this offender and the gun used, another unregistered firearm was seized yesterday following a separate incident.
Highway patrol officers detected a red Ford Festiva speeding along the Walla Walla-Jindera Road at Glenellen near Gerogery about 2.15pm.
Police followed the vehicle towards Albury and by the time they caught up with the car, it had left the road and rolled in a paddock.
Officers saw the driver flee the vehicle on foot and searched the area, but could not find him.
Police searched the car and found identifying papers and an air rifle.
Detective Inspector Woodward said the air rifle was unregistered.
“Later that day, police attended an address in Walla and arrested a 25-year-old man,” he said.
“He was charged with disqualified driving, drive manner dangerous, possession of an unauthorised firearm and of an unregistered weapon.
“If people believe they can posses even an air rifle that is unregistered, and they’re unlicensed to posses that weapon, expect detectives will pay you a visit and you will appear before the courts.
“I can recall two incidents in the last six months where an air rifle has been fired at someone – in Oaklands someone was shot in the leg, and at Jindera someone was struck in the head.
“It is concerning.”
