Joseph Keenes, 26, will remain in jail until at least February 2020 for the confronting incident in mid-2017.
Keenes had targeted a home on Read Street in the early hours of July 23 last year while armed with the weapon.
He had heard the victim was responsible for burglaries in the town and he wanted to take matters into his own hands.
The 26-year-old had smashed windows and the front door with the weapon and screamed out at the victim, who was home with another person.
The pair armed themselves with baseball bats.
Keenes left for about 10 minutes and came back, at which time one of the victims saw the gun, causing them to jump to safety.
Keenes was surprised when the man recognised him and shouted out his name.
“How the f--- do you know my name?” he yelled back.
He left the scene and later threw the firearm off a bridge, which police divers recovered about a week later.
A search of his home found six spent shotgun shells and four live rounds in a black bag.
There were a further three shells in his bedroom.
Police had reached out to Keenes’ family and friends immediately after the incident in a bid to hand himself in and he attended the Albury Police Station.
He won’t be eligible for parole until February 24, 2020, and will serve a maximum term of three years and two months.
Shane Antonio Parker, who waited in Keenes’ car outside the victim’s home during the offence, will remain in jail until at least November 3.
