Frank Zaknich’s title will be changed from general manager to chief executive and he will be supported by two deputy chief executives.

Mr Zaknich is presently supported by four directors, Michael Keys, Brad Ferris, James Jenkins and Tracey Squire, in the areas of planning and environment, engineering, community and recreation and tourism and economic development respectively.

The revised roles were confirmed in a confidential session of council on Monday night, but the changes won’t take effect until July 1 next year when present director contracts are due to expire.

Albury Council’s total senior staff wage bill presently is about $1.4 million.

Consultants Blackadder Associates were appointed to undertake the external review and had input from the mayor Kevin Mack, councillors, Mr Zaknich and his present directors and group leaders.

A report on the review was presented in open council this week, but a confidential session where the revised roles were confirmed was also held.

“These recommendations are out of the latest of those external consultants reports that we engaged to provide some assistance in this process,” Cr Henk van de Ven said in open council.

“We’ve had significant input into the process with one-on-one meetings with the consultant and also had quite a few discussions and workshops.

“I believe the outcomes that we will achieve will mean a better, smarter and leaner council to service the community of Albury.”

Part of the justification of changing Mr Zaknich’s title from general manager to chief executive is a heavier focus on community strategy, organisation culture, leadership and performance and city and regional advocacy with the mayor.

Cr Mack said one deputy CEO role would be in charge of business, growth and community and the other infrastructure, planning and environment.

“Council believes the new structure presents a more contemporary and future-focused approach to serving the community’s needs,” he said.
