SWAN SONG
Chiltern celebrated its 1958, 1968 and 1998 premierships in style with an impressive win against Beechworth last Saturday.
Past players travelled from near and far for the occasion, including Jeff Stephenson and Scott Jarvis from Brisbane and Sawtell, respectively.
Stephenson’s father played in 1958, he played in 1968 and two of his nephews were 1998 premiership players.
There was a number of other fascinating stories to come out of the weekend, including Ken Dixon, who played in the 1958 flag and became the first Chiltern player to win the Harman Medal as the best and fairest player in the Ovens and King league in 1962.
James Johnston, Josh Lappin and Ben Sanderson all visited from Geelong having played a part in an undefeated season for the Swans’ thirds in 1998.
Johnston was eligible to play in the thirds decider, but opted to line up for the seniors where he managed to claim his medallion.
Tony Borrack was a premiership player in 1957, starring in the centre, but showed his versatility by lining up at centre-half-forward in the 1958 flag.
HOPPERS TAKE HIT
Former Albury Thunder star Levi Freeman received a one-match ban for striking Barnawartha’s Thomas Rogerson during Tallangatta’s narrow loss to the Tigers last weekend.
Beechworth’s Ryan Harry and Chiltern’s Daniel Mitchell were given reprimands for striking each other in the third quarter of the clash at Chiltern.
