Dee and Cornelius’ searing, multiple award-winning modern production about women, class and misogyny will play for a week of unforgettable performances at the Butter Factory Theatre, Gateway Village.
Considered one of the most important new Australian productions in recent years, Shit puts the uncensored voice of marginalised women centre stage, in an uncompromising examination of life at the intersections of poverty, violence and abuse.
“Without a doubt, Shit is one of the most unforgettable theatre experiences I’ve had in the last decade”, says HotHouse artistic director Lyn Wallis.
What is remarkable about this production is its visceral impact. Billy, Bobby and Sam – the three damaged women at the heart of the show – are relentless forces of energy to be reckoned with.
They are highly physical, street-wise, and bitterly funny. Language is their weapon of choice and they come out hard, with devastating anger, candour and wit.
“I know that many people will find it confronting, but I guarantee that it isn’t a downer,” Wallis says.
“You get to know and empathise with these women, not as objects of derision or pity, but as powerful human beings wrestling with life in the best way they know how.”
The confronting play is written by Patricia Cornelius (Sydney Theatre Awards: Best New Australian Work) and directed by Susie Dee (Melbourne Green Room Awards: Best Direction), a team whose 30-year creative partnership has produced a swag of provocative original theatre works, which have toured both nationally and internationally.
It played to sell-out audiences at the 2017 Sydney Festival and was part of the Melbourne Theatre Company’s NEON Festival.
The HotHouse season features sensational performances by the original cast, and winner of the Melbourne Green Room Award for Best Ensemble, Sarah Ward, Peta Brady and Albury ex-pat Nicci Wilks.
Wilks is no stranger to Border audiences and performers, having started her career at the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and has previously worked with HotHouse Theatre.
