Falls Creek marketing officer Nathan Fenton said snow began falling heavily across the mountain on Friday, with large flakes visible in the village at 1600m.
He said the apparent temperature, what conditions feel like, had dropped to minus 11 degrees.
Mr Fenton said between 30 and 50 cm of snow could fall on Friday and Saturday, “giving the ski fields a healthy top up after record-breaking June snow conditions.”
He said it was great timing heading into the second week of Victorian school holidays.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Dean Stewart and a strong front and pool of cold air would result in low temperatures, rain in Victoria, as well as hail and thunder in some areas of the state.
“We’re likely to see another 20 to 30 mm of rain occur over North East Victoria and with the cold air it’s likely to fall as snow in the alpine areas,” he said.
Mr Stewart said cold air and strong winds would combine to make the state feel even colder than its minimum temperatures.
Mt Hotham’s Chris Hocking said snowfall could get as low as 900m on Saturday, with blizzard-like conditions in the alps.
He said the intense cold front has brought strong winds.
The cool weather will continue after the weekend with minimum temperatures of zero degrees forecast for Tuesday and Thursday in Albury-Wodonga, with a maximum of 15 predicted across the early half of the week.
Showers will persist across the weekend but clear to cloudy conditions on Monday.
Cool conditions will continue at Mount Hotham, with minimum temperatures remaining in negatives across the week until Thursday, reaching a low of -7 on Sunday, while maximum temperatures will rise from Saturday’s -4 to one degree on Thursday.
Falls Creek is predicted to reach a maximum of three degrees on Thursday after a low of -6 forecast on Sunday.
