I was mildly interested but not surprised by Wodonga Councillor Kat Bennett's concern that African lions were to intrude into the Wodonga City Council’s sphere of influence (‘Big cats not so cool for this Kat’, The Border Mail, July 16).

How easy it is for minor semi-government politicians to assume that because they got enough votes to sup happily at the public free lunch counter, that entitles them to assume they know enough to advise real people on matters other than roads rates and rubbish.
The lions currently living in Australia are all creatures that were born to their current life circumstance. What would Councillor Bennett suggest we do with them? Shoot them, or let them go?
As to the latter suggestion, the current Victorian and soon to be NSW problem with the feral deer (Sambar and Fallow) in the high country may well be solved by releasing all captive lions in Victoria and NSW into the Wonnangatta Valley and turning them loose on the problems caused by the ferals. Deer, cattle, horses and spot-lighters being included in this grouping.

Drink up, you’re lucky
Reading The Border Mail last weekend, I note that a party will be held on Saturday to celebrate the new law to prevent a few gentle, brave people from offering one last chance to mums on the verge of aborting their babies.
We were told “fake news”, that those people were aggressive etc etc? Unfortunately if lies are told often enough, it becomes believable by a lot of people.
So here we are! Drink up folks, enjoy your party. But maybe you could give a minute thinking of how lucky you all have been that your mother nurtured you into this world in nine short months of her life.
About 100,000 others a year never get that chance in this great country.

It’s a voting issue
The past few weeks and months of drama surrounded live sheep exports has been quite stressful.
It is appalling to imagine the hell those poor animals endure.
I was relieved to see that the ship that was supposed to leave yesterday carrying 60,000 sheep was stopped by the Agriculture Department. Well done. Animal cruelty should never be tolerated, let alone supported by any person, government or industry.
That is why the live sheep trade needs to be shut down and Sussan Ley's upcoming live export bill must succeed.
Some things are just wrong, and regardless of history the time has come to consider the future.
The move to ban live export is now a voting issue, and I hope that our MPs recognise that.
It will be what I am thinking about when I go to vote, and I've no doubt that I won't be the only Australian doing so.
I'll be watching carefully to see how my MP votes on the upcoming live export bill, and I truly hope that my local member helps bring an end to the horrific cruelty of the live trade.
