The winless Hawks were level with the Pigeons, who toppled premiers Wangaratta the week before, at half-time before the home team blasted 15 goals to two in a 20.15 (135) to 8.5 (53) win.
“Full credit to Rovers, they were fantastic,” Yarrawonga coach Damian Sexton said.
The game kick-started the Hawks’ brutal run home against the top five teams and there’s fears they’ll receive a series of poundings, but they started the streak with a strong performance.
Jess Koopman and Jayden Gallagher kicked four goals each, while Xavier Leslie joined four others in booting a double.
Veteran Leslie was outstanding, racking up a stack of possessions, while Gallagher, the rejuvenated Nick Lawless, Tyler Bonat and Lach Howe played well.
Stuart Booth kicked three for the visitors, while Alex Marklew and Carpenter were sensational.
